Determining Classic Car Values

I like classic cars a lot, which is why I've decided to make this hubpage explaining what factors come into play when trying to determine classic car values. This information can be especially useful if you're a classic car owner or you are looking to buy a classic car, but it is also very interesting if you're just slightly interested in classic cars.

The make, of the car, which basically means its brand (or body style) is the most important factor in determining classic car values. Famous car makes include Ferrari, Cadillac, Dodge, BMW, Ford, Mazda, Alfa Romeo,Hummer, Auburn, Porsche, Chrysler, Cord, Jaguar, Fiat, Volkswagen, Lamborghini, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Schwarz, Chevrolet, Prowler, and Tucker to name a few. And with classic car values, the general rule of thumb is that the more famous the make (or brand) the higher the price of the car.

Rarity of the car is the next important factor in determining classic car values, so cars that were only produced as part of a limited series are worth much much more than their generic counterparts.

Another important thing to remember when trying to estimate your classic car value is that classic cars with predominately original parts sell for much less than cars than have been adapted or refurbished with more modern gadgets such as an Air conditioning unit or the like.

And before you settle on a car you should always gauge it's market price, which is known to fluctuate. To do so you should visit professional dealers and compare their prices, before deciding to buy (or sell).

Correctly determining classic car values can be a rather difficult task to achieve, but if you are the owner of a classic car or you are in the market to buy one this knowledge is absolutely essential. It is much easier to recognize a classic car than to immediately know its value, and there are, as I've outlined above, nevertheless several key factors to consider when trying to determine the book value of your classic car.

Hey there... I don't agree with the comment about classic cars with original parts selling for less than those with 'extras'. There is without question a market for original, numbers matching cars. Indeed in many (I'd argue the vast majority) of cases changing a classic car to something unsupported by the original build sheet detracts from the value. There is a growing trend for these 'resto-mod' vehicles. However this works when the original vehicle isn't rare, collectable, etc.

So make those changes to an otherwise mint 1967 Pontiac GTO convertible and you've decreased its value. Make those changes to a 1967 Pontiac Safari station wagon and the value 'might' increase.

Thanks for the comment and you're absolutely right, of course. What I've tried to focus on here is the value of "classic" classic cars, but the average classic car redone in a modern way would indeed increase in value.
